Questions

Frequently asked questions

Twenty answers, in four groups: what a class is actually like, how the packs and the booking work, what we will and will not claim about your body, and how this site handles advertising and privacy.

Do I need to be able to get down on the floor?

No. Eight of the nine weekly classes have no floor work at all — you stand up at the beginning and you are still standing at the end. The one exception is Long Wednesday, which finishes with fifteen minutes on the floor, and that is stated in the schedule so you can avoid it if you want to.

This is the question we are asked most, and taking the floor out of most of the week is the single biggest design decision on this site.

I have never done any yoga. Is that a problem?

No. The classes assume nothing and every pose is described from the feet up, out loud, every time — not just the first time it appears. Nobody is expected to already know what a word means.

If you want to arrive having seen the shapes before, the nine pose guides are free and cover almost everything we do.

How many people are in a class?

Never more than 14. That is a hard cap and it is the number at which one teacher can still look at every gallery tile and notice something useful. Saturday morning usually fills; the weekday mornings often have four or five people.

Do I have to have my camera on?

No, and nobody will ask you about it. On is better, because a teacher who cannot see you cannot correct you, and that is most of what you are paying for. But plenty of people keep it off and get exactly the same class, described in the same detail.

Nothing is ever recorded — no class, no part of a class, for any reason.

What do I need to buy?

Nothing. A wall, a dining chair, bare feet and about a bath towel's worth of floor. A mat helps if your floor is hard or cold and is not needed for standing work. Two stacks of books do everything a pair of blocks does.

We use no straps, bolsters, wheels or wedges, there is nothing to install, and there are no affiliate links on this site, so there is nothing in it for us either way.

How do the packs work?

You buy 5 credits for $45.00 or 10 for $80.00. One credit books one class, any class on the schedule — a 30-minute class costs the same single credit as a 75-minute one. Book whenever you like; there is no rule about how fast you use them up.

When exactly do credits expire?

12 months from the day you buy the pack. The purchase email states the actual date rather than the number of months, and we email you when a pack has a month left and again at a week.

If a pack expires with credits on it and something genuinely got in the way, email and tell us. We are small enough to use judgement. We will not publish a policy saying credits never really expire, because that would make the published term false.

Can I cancel a booking?

Yes. Up to 24 hours before the class starts, cancel and the credit goes straight back to your account with no questions and no fee. Inside 24 hours the credit is used, because the place was held and one of 14 spots went unfilled.

If something genuinely went wrong on the day, email us. We would rather sort it out than hold the line over nine dollars.

What if you cancel a class?

The credit returns automatically and you get an email. You do not have to ask and you do not have to chase it. This happens a handful of times a year — illness, a power cut, the internet in Vermont in February.

The dates we are closed in advance are published on the classes page rather than announced, so you can plan a pack around them.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days, in full, on any credits you have not used. For any reason, including that it was not what you expected. One email and you do not have to explain.

Credits you have already used are not refundable — you had the class. That is the only limit. Full terms on the Refund Policy page.

Is this a subscription?

No, and there is a whole Payment Terms page saying so. A pack is a single one-time charge. Nothing renews, no card is kept on file, there is no membership and there is nothing to cancel. When your credits run out, nothing happens — no charge, no reminder sequence, no account to close.

What are the class times in my time zone?

Everything is published in Eastern Time: UTC−5 from early November to mid-March, and UTC−4 from mid-March to early November. Both offsets are printed under the schedule.

Worth knowing: the United States and Europe change their clocks on different weekends, so for about two weeks each spring and autumn the gap between Burlington and London is an hour different from usual. Convert before you book rather than after.

Can somebody else use my credits?

No. Classes cap at 14 and we need to know who is in the room, so credits stay with the person who bought them. If you want to give somebody classes, buy a pack in their name with their email address and we will set it up for them.

Is it safe for me?

We cannot answer that, and anybody who does answer it about a stranger is guessing. We do not know your history, what you have been told to avoid or what is going on in your joints. If you have any doubt, ask a doctor or a physical therapist first — and if you have been given specific instructions about movement, follow those rather than anything on this site.

What we can tell you is what the classes involve: standing, balancing, long holds, a wall and a chair available for everything, no inversions, no arm balances, no fast movement and no floor work in eight of nine classes.

Something hurts when I do one of these poses.

Stop doing it. Not an adjusted version — stop, and ask a doctor or a physical therapist what is going on. Pain during a movement is information about your body, and we have no way to interpret it from the other end of a video call.

The general rule we teach: a sensation that stays level is fine, and a sensation that grows each time you notice it means come out immediately. That rule overrides every instruction on this site.

Will this help with my balance?

We are not going to make that claim, and we would be a bit suspicious of anyone who does. What we can say is what the classes are: practice at standing on one foot, at shifting weight deliberately, and at holding a shape while things wobble. Whether that produces any particular outcome for you is not something a yoga teacher can promise, and the honest answer is that we do not know.

If balance is a medical concern for you — if you have fallen, or been told it is something to watch — that is a conversation to have with a doctor, who can look at the actual cause. Please do not substitute a yoga class for that.

Can I just watch for a bit?

Yes, any time, for any part of a class, and nobody will say anything. Sitting one out and watching is a complete and respectable way to spend ten minutes of a class. It is said out loud at the start of every session, which is the only way it ever actually gets used.

Do you teach in person?

No. Everything is on a video call. There is a mailing address on the contact page because a business ought to have one, but it is an office rather than a studio and there is nothing to visit — please do not turn up expecting a class.

Why are there advertisements on some pages and not others?

Advertising is the second of two ways this site is paid for, and it appears on the home page, the pose guides, the writing and this page. It appears on no page where you might be about to spend money or send us a message: not on the class packs page, the how-a-class-runs page, the order page, the contact page, any policy page or the error page.

Every slot is labelled Advertisement and sits well away from anything you might mean to click. There are no affiliate links anywhere on the site, and no testimonials, reviews or ratings on any page. See the advertising disclosure.

What do you do with my personal information?

We use your email to send booking confirmations, to tell you if a class is cancelled, and to warn you before a pack expires. If you join the occasional note, we use it for that too. We do not sell or share personal information for money or for cross-context advertising.

This site honours Global Privacy Control automatically, so if your browser or extension sends that signal the advertising cookie is refused before you ever see a banner. See Your Privacy Choices.
