Cookie Policy
A short list, because this site uses very few. One item of local storage that we set, and advertising cookies that only appear if you accept them.

What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep, so that something can be remembered between pages or between visits. Local storage does a similar job with a slightly different mechanism. This policy covers both, and uses "cookie" loosely to mean either.
What this site stores
| Name | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
cb-consent |
Local storage | Remembers whether you accepted or rejected advertising cookies, and the date you chose, so we are not asking you on every page and so we have a record of your choice. | 12 months, or until you clear your browser data |
That is the entire list of what we set. We run no analytics of our own, no social media pixels, and no advertising tag of our own. We do not use cookies to identify you, to follow you between sites, or to build a profile.
Third-party advertising cookies
This site carries third-party display advertising. If you accept on the banner, Google and its advertising partners may set cookies in your browser to serve advertisements, to measure them and to limit how often you see the same one. Those cookies are set and read by Google, not by us, and we cannot see them.
If you reject, or if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, no advertising or measurement cookies are set. You may still see advertising, but it will be based on the page you are reading rather than on anything about you.
Google explains its own use of this data at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
Changing your mind
Go to Your Privacy Choices, where you can see your current setting and change it. The change takes effect immediately. You can also clear your browser's stored data for this site, which erases the record and brings the banner back on your next visit.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, and most offer a setting to block third-party cookies specifically, which stops advertising cookies site-wide. Look under Privacy or Security in your browser settings.
Blocking everything will not break this site. The only consequence is that your consent choice cannot be remembered, so the banner appears on each visit.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
The older Do Not Track header was never agreed on as a standard and most
sites ignore it. The Global Privacy Control signal replaced it and is
legally recognised in a growing number of US states, so
we honour it. If your browser or extension sends it, we
record an opt-out automatically, do not allow advertising cookies, and do not
show you the banner. We publish a machine-readable confirmation of this at
/.well-known/gpc.json.
Why there is so little here
A list this short is unusual, and it is deliberate. Most sites accumulate tracking in layers: an analytics tag, then a heatmap tool, then a chat widget, then a social sharing script, each of which brings its own cookies and its own third party reading them. Every one of those is a thing we would have to disclose, a thing that can leak, and a thing that slows the page down.
We decided not to start. We do not know how many people read any particular page on this site, which is occasionally frustrating and has never once affected a decision about what to publish. The trade seems worth it.
Cookies and local storage are not quite the same
A cookie is sent to the server with every request your browser makes, which is what makes cookies useful for tracking and what makes them a privacy question. Local storage stays in your browser and is never sent anywhere unless a script on the page deliberately reads it and transmits it.
We use local storage rather than a cookie for your consent choice, which means that information never reaches our server at all. We cannot see what you chose. The page reads it locally to decide whether to show you the banner, and that is the end of it.
Changes
If we add anything that stores data in your browser, this page is updated before it goes live and the date at the top changes. If the addition is a third-party tag of any kind, it will also require a fresh consent choice from you rather than inheriting the one you made before it existed.
