This is a movement and wellbeing site, not a medical one

Cedar & Breath publishes general movement instruction and written guidance for adults. It is not medical advice, physical therapy, rehabilitation, or diagnosis, and nothing on this site should be used as a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional who knows your situation and your history.

We make no health claims

Nothing on this site is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, injury or health condition, and no instruction here should be read as suggesting that it will. We do not claim that any pose, sequence or breathing exercise published here will relieve a symptom, resolve an injury, change a medical condition, or substitute for care you are receiving. Where we describe how a practice commonly feels, we are describing an experience that varies from person to person, not promising an outcome.

Talk to a doctor first

Speak to your physician before beginning this or any movement practice, particularly if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a current or recent injury, or have had surgery in the last six months.
  • You have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, or have been told to limit physical exertion.
  • You experience dizziness, fainting or balance difficulty.
  • You have glaucoma, a detached retina or another eye condition affected by head position.
  • You have osteoporosis, a spinal condition, joint instability or a hernia.
  • You are pregnant or recently postpartum.
  • You are unsure, for any reason at all, whether this is suitable for you.

Stop if it hurts

Movement should not be painful. Sharp pain, pinching, numbness, tingling, dizziness, chest discomfort or shortness of breath are all reasons to stop immediately and seek medical attention if they persist. Working through pain is not a goal here and never will be. Every pose on this site has a gentler variation and a chair or wall option for exactly this reason, and choosing one of those is not a lesser version of the practice.

You are practising unsupervised

Written instruction and video cannot see you. An instructor in a room can notice that your weight has shifted or that your shoulder has crept up; a web page cannot. You are responsible for working within your own limits, for the safety of your own space, and for stopping when something is wrong.

Practise on a stable, non-slip surface with room to extend your arms in every direction. Keep furniture, lamps and cords out of the way. If balance is a factor, work next to a wall or a sturdy chair, which is the first option given on every balance pose here rather than an afterthought.

Results vary

People differ in flexibility, strength, injury history, body proportion and how their joints are built. Two people doing the same sequence will have different experiences of it, and neither is doing it wrong. Nothing on this site promises a particular outcome, a timescale, or a level of ability.

What a yoga teacher can and cannot tell you

Cedar & Breath teaches movement. Everything published here and everything said in a class is a description of a physical shape and of how it commonly feels — nothing more. We make no claims, in any direction, about what practising will do for your health, your balance, your bones, your blood pressure, your mood, a symptom, a condition or your risk of anything. Claims of that kind are made frequently elsewhere in this field with far more confidence than the evidence supports, and we would rather say plainly that it is outside what a teacher is qualified to tell you.

We also do not diagnose, treat, rehabilitate or manage any condition or injury, and a group class cannot be built around one. If something hurts, if you have been given instructions about movement by a clinician, or if you are recovering from an injury or surgery, the people to work with are a doctor or a physical therapist. Follow their instructions over anything on this site.

If balance, unsteadiness or falling is a concern rather than an interest, please take it to a doctor. Several of the common causes are specific and treatable, none of them can be identified from a web page or a video call, and a yoga class is a reasonable thing to do as well and a poor thing to do instead.

In every class and on every pose guide the rule is the same and it overrides every other instruction we give: a sensation that stays level is fine, and a sensation that grows each time you notice it means come out of the pose immediately. You are the only person who can feel what is happening, so you decide, every time, and sitting something out is always a complete option.
